Using Ultrasound for Vascular Imaging

Our vascular services include a state-of-the-art Vascular Imaging Laboratory, where a variety of vascular tests for venous disorders can be performed.

Using quick, painless and non-invasive duplex ultrasound, the lab team can conduct tests that determine if a vascular disease is affecting blood flow in the arteries and veins. Ultrasound can also map and evaluate blood flow throughout the body. This provides information to help our vascular team diagnose and treat vascular conditions and develop a personalized treatment plan.

The laboratory is led by a certified vascular technologist. Studies are interpreted by our board-certified vascular surgeons, who provide specialty-focused expertise in determining a patient’s treatment.

The lab’s many ultrasound tests can be used to detect a variety of vascular problems. These tests include:

• Abdominal vascular ultrasound, which examines the blood flow in the abdominal aorta––the main artery in the body, which is responsible for pumping oxygen-rich blood from the heart to body organs. This can detect if blood is pooling in one area, which can cause a life-threatening aneurysm.
• Peripheral vascular ultrasound, which examines the blood flow between the large arteries of the arms or legs. Peripheral vascular disease can lead to serious discomfort, such as difficulty walking.
• Renal ultrasound, which examines the arteries supplying blood flow to the kidneys to ensure there are no blockages.
• Carotid ultrasound, which examines the carotid arteries in the neck to determine if blockages are present, which could possibly lead to a stroke.
• Mesenteric ultrasound, which examines the blood flow of mesenteric organs: your stomach, liver, colon and intestine. This helps determine if blockages or poor circulation are causing abdominal pain in the intestines.

We also offer painless and non-invasive Ankle Brachial Index tests. These tests use inflatable pressure cuffs to determine blood flow and pressure in the arms and legs, and can help determine healing ability in the legs. ABI tests are part of many limb plethysmography studies we conduct to determine if blood flow problems are present.
